I'm looking for a HALF set of concert D uilleann pipes?
I'm looking for a HALF set of concert D uilleann pipes?
I've been playing my low whistles for years now and am really ready for the pipes. I'm a beginner, but have played around a bit on a friends half set and really liked it. I want to buy something of fair quality that plays in tune. I would like to not exceed 1500.00$ is this possible? Any helpful ideas or hints of makers or sites would be greatly appreciated.
Bear in mind that just a decent chanter can cost 1500 USD or more, but you can maybe pick up a second hand half set that's
good enough to get started on for 1500-2000 USD
FS 1 half set of Hammon UP's in concert D. Reeds work well, just had a brace put on the base drone top to strengthen it.
The pipes are made of pink ivorywood and the chanter sounds great! I've gotten a lot of compliments on the set. The drone reeds are wood and brass, not cane, so they're quite reliable.
However, I need something a little more maintenance free than wood pipes, so I'm going to get my hands on a Daye set, all plastic no problems! Until I decide to order a 3/4 or full set.
I'm looking for $1500 Canadian, that includes drones, chanter, bag (new) bellows, case, spare drone reed bodies. And is a bit less than what I paid for them. I'll also accept a partial trade of a working Daye half set.
Re: I'm looking for a HALF set of concert D uilleann pipes?
You could always start off with a very good practice set and add drones and later regulators later. The most important part is the chanter, especially for a beginning piper. A mediocre chanter with tuning problems and maybe a mediocre reed will just frustrate you and maybe you'll give up after a couple of years. If you're in North America then I'd recommend starting off with a new or secondhand practice set from either
Tim and Shirley Benson http://users.bandzoogle.com/bensonandcorneliuspipes/mainstocks.cfm
or Brian Bigley http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=54167475
Brian's chanters are based on Dave William's chanters and they don't come better than that. Also both Tim & Shirley and Brian have relatively short waiting lists as folks haven't cottoned on yet
Re: I'm looking for a HALF set of concert D uilleann pipes?
I believe her name is Steph, not Shirley. ;) From what I hear they are making nice stuff.
I'd agree with Steamwilkes. You can get an okay-ish chanter and okay-ish drones for $1500 or you can get a really bloody good chanter you won't have to worry about flogging later for $1500.
To the OP, I have to say I think you should avoid the used Hammon set listed. As a beginner you would be far better off talking to experienced pipers in person and getting a set that you'd seen in person and heard played. If neither you or the seller can play, then find a good piper to come along and vet the set for you.
Stephanie and Tim Benson (not Shirley!) are indeed making great things, but due to one creation their wait list is backed up until August next year for a half set. That's actually very short for a good set of pipes, though.
I did also get to hear a Bigley chanter, and it was nice, but I have way more experience with the Bensons' work.
Of course, this is assuming you're in North America.
Re: I'm looking for a HALF set of concert D uilleann pipes?
Your right, I do have a link in my profile. I'd forgotten about that.
I had a couple of files I recorded in my initial enthiasm over my samsung ipod-a-like. I posted themto soundlantern after a discussion here encouraging members to do so. I had thought there would have been a flood of similar responses. There wasn't.
What can say? Perhpas "baaaah" would cover it
Soundlantern is no more and the link is dead. Your not missing anything.
Re: I'm looking for a HALF set of concert D uilleann pipes?
thanks for the lik about the pipes. and to gedpipes the mandolin is a cross between a guitar and a fiddle. it has a fiddle tuning but you play it like a guitar. its got double strings.

There is a tune played on a similar chanter here http://www.tinwhistletunes.com/clipssnip/uilleann.html

Here's a decent half set for sale (Chris Bailey) with 2 spare reeds, pipe box and tutor plus the chanter has 4 keys. All for 2170 USD + postage. It's in the UK though I think so there could be import tax if you're outside the EU (Common market)
