Adrian Mc Auliffe from Cork, Heard him play in a session at this years fleadh. He is a lovely player with a deadly steady style. Plays with the Allow Ceili band from Cork. I would rate him with the best!
it may be fitting here to remember two great players out of London who died before their time in recent years, and were quite probabily 'favourite' to millions worldwide _ namely Tommy McManamon and Roger Dinsdale
I'm shocked nobody has mentioned Kevin Griffin. His playing on "Across the Pond" (available on i-Tunes) is brilliant. When it comes to variation, Griffin is like the Tommy Peoples of the banjo.
Gerry O'Connor or Mark Conyard. Played in a session with him the other day and WOW!!! he is amazing. He's going to be playing at a session in the Garryowen in Twickenham, Sunday 6-8 if any one wants to see him play. Theres a link in the advert for the session in the garryowen which brings you to a facebook page giving all the details. it looks amazing. Some of the Banjo greats are getting involved, like Mark, Enda Scahill and so on
Must agree Adrian mc Auliffe is a great player with a lovely lift to his music. Its years since I've heard him though. Ireland have loads of banjo players but it all down to choice and style. Brian Mc Grath must be the cream of the crop in my opinion.
Not much of Kevin Griffin on you tube, here's one, Kevin's playing starts about 2:48 in, to around 5:00. Nice interview with the man as well, and a good impression of session culture there. He has a good gig there at Doolin, 7 nights a week or so, I understand.
Fantastic player: http://www.listal.com/video/102010496

Jody Moran from Leeds. He's a nice singer too.
I ran into John Carty in London last year, but he didn't play the banjo that evening. Well, he was great on the fiddle.

Re: Favourite banjo player
I'd like to put in my vote for Mark Conyard of Hungry Grass. He's also a great fiddle player.

Re: Favourite banjo player
Lisaniska, Tommy McManamon wrote a great banjo tune called Das Beast, which Gerry Divers passed on to us in class. Works well on fiddle too.

Re: Favourite banjo player
Just remembered, heard Lena Ullman playing a few sessions at Feakle festival this year. She has great rhythm and "space" in her playing.

Re: Favourite banjo player
Sadly, she didn't sing Dave, but played a cracking duet with Denis Cahill at Peppers. I must get one of her cds.
